Description
Tulbaghia violacea
Ecuadorian cebollín is a beautiful, productive perennial with long green leaves and delicate pink to lavender flowers. The leaves, tender flower stalks and flowers are all edible, with a mild garlic and onion flavor that works beautifully in salads, eggs, soups, vegetables, sauces and fresh herb blends.
The flowers are especially lovely in the kitchen. They can be scattered fresh over meals, added to salads or used as an edible garnish, while the leaves can be harvested regularly and will continue growing from the base.
Traditionally, Tulbaghia violacea has also been valued as a food-medicine plant. It contains naturally occurring sulfur compounds and other phytonutrients and has been used traditionally to support circulation, digestion, respiratory health and general vitality.
It is an easy plant to grow in warm climates and does well in full sun or light shade in fertile, living soil. Once established, the plant forms larger clumps that can be divided and replanted, making it a wonderful perennial food plant for the garden.
A useful plant that brings together food, medicine, flowers and pollinator habitat in one hardy perennial.
Sold as a live plant.
