Cleavers is a soft, sprawling herb recognized by its narrow whorled leaves and tiny hooked hairs that allow the stems to cling to clothing, animals and surrounding plants. It grows quickly through cool, moist garden spaces and is traditionally valued as both a spring food and a gentle lymphatic herb.
The fresh young plant can be used in juices, teas, infusions and herbal preparations. Cleavers has a long history of use for supporting lymphatic movement, fluid balance, urinary function and the body’s natural clearing pathways.
In the garden, cleavers prefers moist, fertile living soil with partial shade and plenty of organic matter. It weaves easily through other plants, covers exposed ground and contributes fresh organic material back into the soil as it grows and cycles.
