Soap Nut Washing Up Liquid with Rosemary
Our Soap Nut Washing Up Liquid began with a workshop here at Living Ground, when Deidre came up from the coast and spent time with the girls teaching them how to make it. It was one of those practical skills that immediately made sense: simple ingredients, easy to make, useful every day, and gentle enough for hands that are constantly in washing water.
Soap nuts are the dried fruit of the Sapindus tree and naturally contain saponins, plant compounds that create a cleansing action when mixed with water. We prepare the liquid in small batches and add rosemary essential oil, giving it a fresh herbal scent that feels completely at home in the kitchen.
The girls love using it because it is so easy on their hands. When you are washing dishes throughout the day, that makes a real difference. It works well for plates, glasses, cutlery, pots and pans, helping lift grease and food residue without leaving the hands feeling dry and stripped.
There is something we especially like about making our own washing-up liquid from a plant. The soap nuts give us their natural saponins, we use them in the kitchen, and the spent plant material can return to the compost and back into the living soil. It is another small example of how the kitchen, plants, microbes and soil can remain connected.
Use a small amount directly on a sponge or cloth, or add it to warm washing water.
