Description
The original tobacco seed came to us from Canada and has now been grown here in our Living Ground gardens in Vilcabamba. After growing alongside local tobacco, we believe there may have been some natural cross-pollination, so this seed may now carry characteristics from both the original Canadian plants and the tobacco growing here in Ecuador.
It is a vigorous, sun-loving tobacco with broad green leaves and tall flowering stems carrying delicate pink flowers. Tobacco has a long history throughout the Americas, where it has been grown as an important traditional and ceremonial plant.
The plants appreciate warmth, full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. The seeds are extremely fine and are best sown on the surface of moist soil where they can receive light for germination. They should not be deeply covered.
Because these are garden-grown, naturally pollinated seeds, there may be some variation from plant to plant. We actually like this. Seed that is grown, saved and replanted in one place begins its own relationship with the local climate, soil, insects and growing conditions.
