Ant Tree / Fernán Sánchez (Triplaris cumingiana)

A beautiful native Ecuadorian tree also known as Árbol Hormiguero because of its fascinating relationship with ants. The young branches and stems are naturally hollow, creating spaces where ants can establish colonies. In return, the ants help protect the tree, making this a wonderful example of the relationships that develop between plants, insects and the surrounding ecosystem.

It is a fast-growing tree with large simple leaves, strong visible veins and a straight trunk. Mature trees can become quite large and develop a broad leafy crown that provides shade. Female trees produce attractive pink to reddish winged structures around the fruits, which are carried by the wind.

Fernán Sánchez is useful in regenerative planting, reforestation and agroforestry systems. Its canopy provides shade, while fallen leaves return organic material to the soil surface, helping protect the soil, hold moisture and feed the living soil community. It is a beautiful tree for creating more diversity and habitat in the landscape.

Un hermoso árbol nativo del Ecuador, también conocido como Árbol Hormiguero por su fascinante relación con las hormigas. Las ramas y tallos jóvenes son naturalmente huecos, creando espacios donde las hormigas pueden establecer sus colonias. A cambio, las hormigas ayudan a proteger el árbol, formando un maravilloso ejemplo de las relaciones que existen entre las plantas, los insectos y todo el ecosistema que los rodea.

Es un árbol de crecimiento rápido, con hojas grandes y simples, nervaduras muy marcadas y un tronco recto.
