Bitter Melon – Melón Amargo

(Momordica charantia)

A vigorous tropical climbing vine producing distinctive orange, textured fruits with an intensely bitter flavor. Bitter melon has a long history as both food and traditional plant medicine, particularly in Asia, India, Africa and tropical regions of the Americas. The young fruits and leaves are edible when properly prepared and are especially valued for their natural plant compounds and traditional use in supporting healthy digestion and balanced glucose metabolism. The vine grows quickly in warm conditions and benefits from a trellis or fence for support. Sow seeds in warm, moist, living soil in full sun, keeping the soil gently moist during germination. Once established, it appreciates fertile soil, regular moisture and plenty of space to climb. Its yellow flowers attract pollinators, followed by abundant fruits that turn yellow-orange when fully mature and open to reveal brilliant red-covered seeds.

This plant is very aggressive at the Project site and the fruits are so pretty with bright red seeds

Una enredadera tropical vigorosa que produce frutos  muy característicos, de superficie rugosa y sabor intensamente amargo. El melón amargo tiene una larga historia como alimento y planta medicinal tradicional, especialmente en Asia, India, África y las regiones tropicales de América. Los frutos jóvenes y las hojas son comestibles cuando se preparan adecuadamente y son especialmente valorados por sus compuestos vegetales naturales y su uso tradicional para apoyar una digestión saludable y un metabolismo equilibrado de la glucosa. Crece rápidamente en climas cálidos y agradece un enrejado o cerca donde pueda trepar. Siembre las semillas en suelo vivo, cálido y húmedo, a pleno sol, manteniendo una humedad suave durante la germinación. Una vez establecida, agradece un suelo fértil, humedad regular y bastante espacio para trepar. Sus flores amarillas atraen polinizadores y luego producen abundantes frutos que se vuelven amarillo-anaranjados al madurar completamente y se abren para mostrar semillas cubiertas de un rojo intenso.
