Black Elephant Ear / Oreja de Elefante Negra

Dramatic tropical ornamental with very large, dark leaves. Excellent for creating lush tropical areas and beautiful contrast in the garden.

I found this beautiful Black Elephant Ear a number of years ago while driving home from the coast. I stopped at a small nursery in the cloud forest, just as the road begins climbing into the Andes, and there it was. I was immediately drawn to its enormous, deep purple-black leaves. It cost $10, I bought one plant, brought it home, and planted it in the garden.

Because it loves moisture, I also planted pieces along the little canal waterways that run through the property, where the soil stays damp and the plants are protected from strong sun. It loves shade and moist, living soil, and in those conditions it has absolutely flourished. From that single plant, I now probably have more than 500. It spreads and crawls naturally, creating beautiful colonies of dark foliage beneath the trees and along the water.

It has become one of those plants that feels completely at home here. The huge velvety purple leaves bring such depth and contrast to the garden, especially among all the greens. Give it shade, plenty of moisture, rich living soil and room to wander, and it can become a spectacular tropical groundcover and feature plant.

Encontré esta hermosa Oreja de Elefante Negra hace varios años cuando regresaba a casa desde la costa. Me detuve en un pequeño vivero en el bosque nublado, justo donde el camino comienza a subir hacia los Andes, y allí estaba. Inmediatamente me enamoré de sus enormes hojas de un color morado muy profundo, casi negro. Costaba $10, compré una sola planta, la traje a casa y la sembré en mi jardín.

Como le encanta la humedad, también fui sembrando algunas plantas a lo largo de los pequeños canales de agua que atraviesan la propiedad, donde la tierra permanece húmeda y las plantas están protegidas del sol fuerte. Le gusta mucho la sombra y un suelo vivo y húmedo, y en estas condiciones ha prosperado increíblemente. De aquella única planta ahora probablemente tengo más de 500. Se extiende y se arrastra naturalmente, formando hermosas colonias de follaje oscuro debajo de los árboles y junto al agua.

Se ha convertido en una de esas plantas que parece sentirse completamente en casa aquí. Sus enormes hojas aterciopeladas de color morado oscuro crean un contraste precioso entre todos los verdes del jardín. Con sombra, bastante humedad, un suelo rico y vivo, y espacio para extenderse, puede convertirse en una espectacular cobertura tropical y en una planta protagonista dentro del jardín.
