Description

These seeds come from broccoli grown here at Living Ground Project in southern Ecuador. The plants grew well in our gardens, producing strong green heads followed by smaller side shoots. By saving seed from plants that thrive in our conditions, we continue selecting for broccoli adapted to our local soil, climate, and living soil biology.

Broccoli is a brassica and grows particularly well in soil supported by a strong bacterial community, including Actinobacteria. For this reason, we like to prepare the planting area with young, biologically active compost, where these organisms are more strongly represented. This helps create the soil food web conditions broccoli prefers while supporting nutrient cycling around the roots.

Plant in full sun, keep the soil evenly moist, and give each plant enough room to develop. Harvest the main head while it is firm and compact, then leave the plant in the ground as it will often continue producing smaller side shoots.
