Description

Flora Flower Electrolyte Tonic is a bright, mineral-rich garden drink made from chaga mushroom, nettle and aromatic flowers, then lifted with citrus, vinegar, sea salt and cream of tartar. It was created as a refreshing alternative to brightly colored commercial electrolyte drinks, using recognizable ingredients from the garden, kitchen and fermentation jar.

The base begins with chaga and nettle, giving the tonic an earthy, mineral character. Rose, jasmine, rose geranium and basil bring in the garden, adding fragrance, plant compounds and a beautiful floral complexity. A little mead carries the sweetness and fermented character of honey, while citrus and vinegar give the drink its fresh, tart edge.

Electrolytes from the kitchen

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. Our muscles, nerves and cells depend upon them for normal fluid balance, movement and communication. When we sweat heavily, work in the garden, exercise, travel in hot weather or simply do not drink enough, water alone may not always replace everything that has been lost.

Flora Flower uses a simple mineral combination. Salt supplies sodium and chloride, while cream of tartar, naturally known as potassium bitartrate, contributes potassium. These minerals are combined with water, plants, citrus and fermented ingredients to create a tonic that is both refreshing and functional without needing artificial colors or the syrupy sweetness found in many commercial sports drinks.

Chaga, nettle and the garden

Chaga gives the infusion its deep earthy foundation. This unusual mushroom contains naturally occurring polysaccharides, pigments and plant-like compounds extracted slowly into the water during preparation.

Nettle brings another layer entirely. Traditionally valued as a nourishing mineral herb, nettle contains a broad spectrum of naturally occurring plant minerals and phytonutrients. Rose, jasmine and rose geranium then soften the earthy base with their aromatic oils and floral compounds, while basil adds a fresh green note that ties the garden together.

It tastes less like a conventional electrolyte drink and more like something made between the garden, apothecary and fermentation kitchen.

A little fermentation in the bottle

Mead is fermented honey, one of humanity’s oldest fermented drinks. Here it is used in a small amount as part of the flavor and botanical composition of the tonic.

Vinegar contributes another transformation from the microbial kitchen. Fermentation changes the original ingredients, producing organic acids and entirely new flavors. Paired with citrus, the vinegar creates the lively acidity that makes Flora Flower particularly refreshing on a warm Vilcabamba afternoon.

The garden provides the plants. Microbes transform part of the ingredients. Minerals provide the electrolytes. The kitchen brings them together.

That is very much the Living Ground way of making a drink.
