Description
Albuca bracteata, commonly called Pregnant Onion, False Sea Onion or Sea Onion, is a striking South African bulb plant known for the small baby bulbs, or offsets, that form around the outside of the mother bulb.
The large green bulb sits partly above the soil and produces long, arching, semi-succulent leaves. In spring and summer, tall flower stalks appear with clusters of delicate white flowers marked by a green stripe.
Pregnant Onion is very easy to grow and readily produces new plants. It prefers well-drained soil, partial to full sun and moderate watering. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant and does especially well in warm climates, containers, rock gardens and sheltered garden beds.
The small bulbs that develop around the mother plant can be gently removed and replanted, making this a wonderful plant for anyone who enjoys propagating and sharing plants.
